A tip is usually a percentage of the bill:
Tip = Bill * Tip % / 100
Enter the bill, the tip percentage and how many people are paying, and the calculator shows the tip, the total and each person's share. It also works backwards: enter the bill and the total you paid, and it shows what percentage that was.
Example
A bill of $86.40, a tip of 18%, split between 4 people:

86.40 * 18 / 100 = 15.55 -
Total:
86.40 + 15.55 = 101.95 -
Each person:
101.95 / 4 = 25.49

A quick way in your head: 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left, and 20% is twice that.
How much to tip
Customs differ a lot between countries:
- United States: 15–20% for good service at a sit-down restaurant is the norm, and 20% or more for excellent service.
- Canada: similar, about 15–20%.
- United Kingdom and much of Europe: about 10%, often already added as a service charge, so check the bill first.
- Japan: tipping is not expected, and can be refused.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Usually before tax, on the price of the food and drink. Tipping on the total after tax is also common, and gives a slightly larger tip.
