Cooking Converter

The Cooking Converter turns kitchen measures between the metric system and the US, UK and EU versions of cups, spoons, fluid ounces, pints, quarts and gallons. The same name means a different amount in each: a US cup is 236.6 mL, a UK cup 284.1 mL, and a metric (EU) cup 250 mL.

It converts volumes only. Flour, sugar and butter are often measured by weight, and a cup of flour weighs far less than a cup of water, so weights need a kitchen scale or a recipe's own conversion.

How to convert cooking measures

Type a value into any field, and every other measure is calculated at once. For example, 1.5 US cups:

1. In milliliters: multiply by 236.588.

   1.5 * 236.588 = 354.9 mL

2. In US tablespoons: a cup is 16 tablespoons.

   1.5 * 16 = 24 tbsp

In US measures: 3 teaspoons make a tablespoon, 16 tablespoons a cup, 2 cups a pint, 2 pints a quart and 4 quarts a gallon.

In the United States, one cup is equal to approximately 236.59 milliliters or 8 fluid ounces (US). In the European Union a cup is equal to 250 milliliters, while in the United Kingdom it is equal to 284 milliliters or 10 fluid ounces (UK).

• Fluid Ounce (fl oz) - The fluid ounce is a unit primarily used to measure liquid volume in the United States where it is equal to 29.57 milliliters, and the United Kingdom where it is equal to 28.41 milliliters.

• Pint (pint) - The pint is a larger unit of volume commonly used to measure liquids, especially in the United States and United Kingdom. The definition of a pint varies between these two countries. In the United States, a pint is equal to 16 fluid ounces (US), which is approximately 473.18 milliliters. • Quart (quart): The quart is an even larger unit that is equivalent to one-quarter (1/4) of a gallon. In the United States it is approximately 946.35 milliliters and in the United Kingdom it is 1,136.52 milliliters.

• Gallon (gal): The gallon is the largest unit in this converter and, like the three before it, is used mainly in the United States and the United Kingdom. The United States Gallon is equal to 128 fluid ounces (US), or 3,785 milliliters. The United Kingdom Gallon is equal to 160 fluid ounces (UK), or 4,546 milliliters.
